You are in luck – if you are in IT, that is. I will give you a hint. Read up.
I work in IT field. If you are not – this entry will not be relevant to you… at all. Sorry. If you’d like to follow my approach, either move to IT field or do something along the same lines.
Since there are almost no local Enterprises that need advanced IT specialists – I had to figure something out. When we decided to move, I was working for Amazon, AWS to be exact. I’ve been there almost 5 years, which is like 15 in non-Amazon years (it is a very dynamic environment, so folks count 1 year for 3, almost like dog years). I checked with HR, and there was no way I’d be able to work for Amazon from Georgia. Not any way at all – can only physically work from countries where they have offices.
So I had to leave and go another route. Here is my LinkedIn post with my parting message. Good bye Amazon.
In order to work remotely, you will most likely need to work as a contractor. I did market research for you, so trust me on this – and I interviewed with a few US-based and a couple of EU-based companies. None of them wanted to deal with tax implications of having a foreign employee working from Georgia. Even if I was a great fit (which I was, in a couple of cases for sure).
So I decided to go with an option that offers maximum flexibility – and formed my own LLC. You are welcome. Be your own boss – that has a number of additional PITA things to take care of, but as a result, you can work directly or through any contracting company that offers C2C arrangement. I formed an LLC in Wyoming, and plan to form another once in Georgia after I move, and use that one for my customers if I can (for tax reasons. Trust me, I spent $800 on tax lawyers to figure this one out). YMMV and so on, I can refer you to lawyers I worked with (they seem quite good. And expensive. So start saving $$ now).
I may write a separate post focusing on forming and running an LLC. Later.
My recommendation: this subject can benefit from thorough advanced planning. Explore multiple revenue streams that may be a bit (or very) different than what you used to do. Explore US and European income sources (or Arabic if your background is from Arabic countries and you speak the language). Just don’t count on a local income source in Georgia (unless you want to open a restaurant and scrape by a cheap living arrangement)
